Exercise 1

[op_liveeditor_element data-style=””]

  • Reflect on Last Year

Before you move into the 1 year goal setting and even shorter term goal setting you should be reflecting back on the last 12 months and looking at what you’ve achieved.

You will most likely be one of two people:

1 – Proud of what you achieved and give yourself a pat on the back. This will motivate you towards wants more pleasure of achieving more in the next 12 months.

2 – Realise you didn’t really accomplish much and this will motivate you away from the pain of having another year where this happens.

It’s important to remember that you cannot change the past however you can learn lessons from what you did or didn’t do in the past.

Depending on which of the two people you are from above you should be able to identify what you did well and what you didn’t do well last year and do your best to use these lessons to ensure you see the success you want in the next 12 months.

Download and print out the ‘reflect on last year worksheet’ from the resources section above and answer the questions in there to give you an idea of what you have done well and what you could be doing better moving forward.

It’s important to remember that if you didn’t do a good job in the past then don’t beat yourself up, learn from the mistakes you made and push forward the Kaizen way with small but continuous improvements to move you towards your goals.

Chances are you will give yourself a much harder time than anyone else will so do your best to let go of beating yourself up once you have identified areas for improvement and use all your energy to create the best version of yourself you can possibly be.

Exercise 2

  • Complete Your 1 Year Goals

It’s time to work on arguably the most exciting goal setting so far, the 1 year goal setting. This is really moving into the shorter term goal setting and really 1 year is not a long time!

You should have your ‘Goal Setting Worksheet’ open and be using all your 10, 5, 3 and 2 year goals as the outline to start breaking them down into smaller milestones for these 1 year goals.

The 5 step Goal Setting Process again is:

1 – Define What, Why and When
    2 – Conformity
    3 – Scope
    4 – Develop a Blueprint
5 – Draw Up an Action Plan

Do you best to have a least 1 goal in all 8 areas of your life so you can see improvements across your entire life. Some areas each year will naturally outweigh others but do your best to keep some balance.

When focusing on the SMART goal setting, make sure the last part, the Time-based in really specific. Don’t just say you will achieve this be December 31st. Say you will achieve this by 5pm on Thursday the 15th of December 2016.

Remember to keep using the goal setting matrix with the priority of A, B or C and the difficulty of 1, 2 or 3.

Expect there to be considerations, fears and roadblocks appearing, if they are not chances are you are not setting your goals large enough.

Understand than even in the space of 1 year things change and you need to be flexible, be fluid and move with them. You may find you want to move the goal-posts yourself as circumstances in your life have changed and that is fine, adjust and keep pushing forward. You may find facts around what you are trying to achieve change and you are forced to move with this, that’s fine too!

Make sure you are persistent. NEVER GIVE UP! We want you to be able to do the same exercise of reflecting on last year in 12 months time and see just how far you’ve come! To be so motivated towards the pleasure you feel from all you have accomplished that this entire goal setting process just becomes habitual as the years go on.

Fill your 1 year goals in on your Goal Setting Worksheet but also print them out and have them somewhere that you can view them on a daily basis as a reminder of why you are doing what you are doing. Seeing these goals every day will allow your subconscious mind to go to work for you to help you achieve them. Plus seeing them daily will mean you are more aware of the decisions you are making on a daily basis to ensure they support the achievement of these goals.

Lastly, enjoy the journey, it’s not just about the destination and reaching these goals in the next 12 months! You need to enjoy the journey along the way, the process of working towards and achieving these goals. If you don’t enjoy the journey, it will make it significantly harder for you to reach your destination, your end goal. It’s time to stop swimming upstream and go with the current, you’ll be a lot happier and see significantly more success in all areas of your life.

Exercise 3

[op_liveeditor_element data-style=””]

  • Create Your Breakthrough Goal

Now you have completed all your goals right down to 1 year out it’s time to set that 1 breakthrough goal.

Remember all your goals to date will represent incremental improvements in your life and will move you towards that ultimate life vision you have created and desire.

The breakthrough goal is however just 1 goal that will represent a quantum leap forward for you. It must be something that will really push you to your limits! If you do manage to achieve this though your level of motivation will be unparalleled.

For example your 1 year goal may be to increase your income by 20%. Well your breakthrough goal might be to double your income in the year. Obviously this is going to be a much larger goal to hit but if you focus on hitting your breakthrough goal you will almost definitely achieve your 1 year goal. In fact you will likely surpass your 1 year goal faster than you could ever have imagined!

Even if you don’t quite hit your breakthrough goal at the end of the year, if you get close, chances are it’s significantly better than you would have done without if being set.

It’s better to fall just short of a huge life changing goal than it is to achieve a mediocre goal so keep that in mind!

Once you have recorded your breakthrough goal head to a printing shop and have this goal printed on a business card and place it in your wallet or purse so you see it every time you get that out to pay for something.

Lastly make sure you look at this breakthrough goal 3 times every single day. When you wake up, at lunchtime and before you go to bed. And keep this goal in the SMART goal setting framework!
